BFI Film Academy – Highlands and Islands – Apply Now

Highlands BFI Partners Screen Education Edinburgh, in partnership with Eden Court, is delighted to run the BFI Film Academy for the Highlands and Islands for a second year. The Academy will take place in Inverness over late June and early July 2015.

Jointly funded in Scotland by Creative Scotland and the British Film Institute, the BFI Film Academy aims to help train and inspire the next generation of British filmmakers, supporting talented and committed young people aged 16-19 to develop the commercial and cultural knowledge and skills to help make a career in film a reality.

The BFI Film Academy offers training for every film industry role, from writing and directing through to production, sound design, editing and camera, and provides learning around film history and cinematic storytelling to inspire an appreciation of film culture in the round.

Last year twelve participants went through this programme producing two short films that have since been screened in Scotland, California, Utah and Spain.

The Film Academy will offer young people specific training in; storytelling, directing, acting, production, sound recording, editing and camera with the final aim of devising, shooting and producing a plot driven narrative short film.

The academy is open to applications from any young person aged 16-19 living within the Highlands and Islands and Moray regions. The BFI Film Academy, based at Eden Court cinema will take place over a one month period (27th June-20th July) and will involve an intro weekend, an intensive 4 day learning phase, a 4 day shooting and editing phase and a screening for friends and family. Dates:

  • Intro Weekend: Sat 27th/Sun 28th June
  • Learning and Development Phase: Mon 6th-Thurs 9th July
  • Shooting & Editing Phase: Mon 13th-Thurs 16th July
  • Screening & Evaluation: Saturday 18th July
  • What’s Next? Event: Wed 22nd July

This opportunity is targeted at young people with a keen interest in filmmaking, whether through school, college or at home. If you are passionate about film and determined to forge a career in the industry then you are encouraged to apply.

_MG_0041You must be available to attend all the sessions above and please note there is a £25 participation fee for successful applicants. For those who require financial assistance this £25 fee may be waived and there is the opportunity of travel bursaries and assistance – please indicate this on your application form.

If you get a place, you will work towards the completion of the BFI\Skillset Preparing to Work in the Film Industry qualification that will enhance your knowledge, skills, CV and further and higher education applications.
